Description

Model 3180 PXI Amplifier for High Voltage PXI Applications

The Model 3180 PXI Amplifier was engineered to overcome one of the most common limitations in PXI systems. Standard PXI waveform generators are powered by 12V rails, which restrict their output to approximately 10Vp-p into 50Ω. This limitation prevents many engineers from reaching higher voltage requirements in demanding applications.

The Model 3180 PXI Amplifier solves this problem by incorporating advanced DC to DC conversion and a unique high voltage design. It amplifies input signals up to 180Vp-p ±90V while maintaining excellent signal integrity. With output current up to 150mA, it provides reliable drive capability for a wide range of loads.

Performance and Bandwidth

Despite its compact single slot PXI format, the Model 3180 PXI Amplifier delivers impressive bandwidth performance. It offers:

  • Large signal bandwidth up to 300kHz
  • Small signal bandwidth up to 1MHz
  • Slew rate up to 120V per microsecond

Selectable gain configurations up to x50 allow users to tailor amplification levels to specific system requirements. Custom gain options are also available upon request, although bandwidth may vary depending on configuration.

The amplifier draws power only from the ±12V and +5V rails, leaving other power supply rails available for additional PXI modules. This ensures efficient system integration without sacrificing available current for other devices.

Safety and System Integration

Safety was a primary design focus of the Model 3180 PXI Amplifier. A front panel mechanical switch blocks the high voltage path, while a safety latch prevents accidental high voltage application to the unit under test. High voltage output is enabled only after the latch is lifted and the switch is turned on. In emergency situations, pressing the protective latch instantly removes high voltage from the output terminals.

A red front panel indicator provides clear visual confirmation when high voltage is active, adding another layer of operational safety.

The Model 3180 PXI Amplifier is widely used in automotive testing where 28V or higher is required, as well as in defense and aviation applications that demand even greater voltage levels. It is a cost effective and versatile solution for engineers seeking high voltage capability within a PXI framework.
